Freshwater & Wetlands

Wadhurst Park is home to a rich network of freshwater and wetland habitats, which we manage to support wildlife and clean water.

These habitats provide essential breeding, foraging, and sheltering grounds for amphibians, aquatic invertebrates, birds, and wetland plants. Alongside this, we are recreating ghost ponds, restoring river meanders, and expanding wetland areas to bring back lost habitats, improve water quality, and increase biodiversity across the estate’s freshwater landscape
Freshwater habitats
Ponds are some of the most valuable freshwater habitats on the estate. With over 100 ponds across Wadhurst Park — from shaded woodland pools to sunlit field-edge hollows — these small waterbodies support a wide range of aquatic life. They provide breeding grounds for amphibians, habitat for aquatic invertebrates, and feeding and drinking sites for birds, bats, and mammals.
We prioritise clean water in our ponds, avoiding inputs of nitrates and phosphorus that can lead to algal blooms and biodiversity loss. Many of our ponds are rain-fed or spring-fed, helping maintain high water quality. This supports a rich aquatic flora and fauna, including newts, dragonflies, water beetles, and marginal plants like yellow iris and water mint.
To keep ponds in good ecological condition, we carry out occasional management such as desilting and selective vegetation clearance. This allows light to reach the water, prevents succession to dry land, and maintains open water for aquatic species. Management is conducted on a rotational basis to ensure a variety of pond types and successional stages across the estate.
We are also recreating ghost ponds — long-lost waterbodies identified using historic Ordnance Survey maps from the 1870s. These ponds were often filled in for agriculture, but still retain viable seed banks beneath the soil. By excavating and restoring them, we bring back forgotten habitats and reconnect wetland networks, helping to reverse the decline of freshwater biodiversity.

Wetlands are vital for biodiversity, water storage, and climate resilience. At Wadhurst Park, we’re creating wetland habitats by blocking or amending old land drains and culverts to raise water levels and re-establish more natural water movement across the landscape. These interventions help to slow the flow of water, reduce runoff, and re-wet grasslands — creating the saturated conditions needed for wetland species to thrive.
Standing water, saturated soils, and seasonal pools provide breeding grounds and feeding habitats for aquatic invertebrates and amphibians, which in turn support birds and mammals higher up the food chain.
We take a light-touch approach to wetland management, allowing natural processes to shape the landscape. In some areas, we manage vegetation to maintain open water and prevent scrub encroachment, while in others, we allow succession to create a mosaic of wet grassland, reedbed, and wet woodland. This varied structure supports a wide range of species and enhances the resilience of the wider habitat mosaic.

Wadhurst Park is crossed by two streams, the Coggins Mill Stream and Tidebrook — both part of the River Rother catchment, which eventually flows out to Rye Harbour. These streams are vital freshwater corridors, linking habitats across the estate and supporting a wide range of aquatic and riparian species. In addition, the estate is home to numerous natural springs, many of which rise in the ghyll woodlands.
The streams provide clean, flowing water that supports aquatic invertebrates, amphibians, and fish, as well as feeding and nesting sites for kingfishers and bats. Their banks host wetland plants, mosses, and ferns, creating rich edge habitats that connect woodland, grassland, and wetland zones.
We manage our streams to maintain natural hydrology, improve water quality, and support wildlife. This includes removing artificial barriers, where we can, restoring natural meanders, and allowing vegetation to grow along the banks to stabilise soils and provide shade. These actions help slow the flow, reduce erosion, and enhance the ecological value of the stream corridor.

Wadhurst Park lake, originally constructed in the 1880s, is the largest body of water on the estate. In the past it was used for duck shoots, reflecting the sporting traditions of the time. Today, the lake is a haven for wildlife, forming a central part of our freshwater and wetland network.
Surrounded by woodland, grassland, and wetland habitats, the lake provides important habitat for waterfowl, dragonflies, and aquatic plants, as well as a feeding ground for bats and birds of prey. Its edges support marginal vegetation, wet woodland, and willow scrub, creating a diverse edge habitat that’s vital for nesting and foraging species.
We manage the lake with a focus on water quality, habitat diversity, and minimal disturbance. No artificial feeding or stocking takes place, and the surrounding vegetation is managed sensitively to maintain a balance of open views, light penetration, and natural succession. The lake also plays a role in flood management and climate resilience, helping to store water and support wetland species during dry periods.
