Archiving internship

We are looking for an intern to work at Wadhurst Park, an 800 hectare (1,980 acre) private family estate within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in East Sussex. The intern will support our archivist, who is setting up a new family archive.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to gain practical experience as they work towards a career in archives management.

The internship will involve:

  • Rehousing archive materials, including removing metal and tape, and re-storing them in acid-free folders in archive boxes.
  • Auditing the collection to find digital media; cataloguing the estate photo library to make it reliably searchable; and adding metadata.
  • Creating a draft catalogue outline, by describing the material within the collection to enhance understanding and accessibility.

The intern will mainly be based at Wadhurst Park in East Sussex, for six weeks from Monday 20 July to Friday 28 August 2020.

The internship pays £500 a week, for a 35-hour week. We will provide accommodation (for time spent at Wadhurst Park), but the intern is responsible for their own food, telephone and utility bills. Please note that the estate is 4 miles from the nearest public transport and village.

The internship will begin on Monday 20 July with an induction day in London. It will end with the intern giving a presentation on their work on Friday 28 August, also in London.

Ideal qualifications:

  • 2:1 or higher (or on track for) – the role might suit a recent graduate looking for archiving experience before starting an information / archive administration & records management qualification, but we are equally open to receiving applications from undergraduates considering a career in archiving

Ideal skills and experience:

  • a demonstrable interest in archive / records management
  • ability to work independently and as part of a team
